The TA Practices, Teaming and Coaching, occur throughout the CA MTSS implementation process. Establishing a strong teaming structure and coaching practice, as you build your CA MTSS, will ensure your system is scalable and sustainable for many years to come. While your team may build the best Leadership Team who reviews data and determines priorities, coaching will build the partnerships that will lead to systems change.
While the Teaming TA Practice creates the foundational structures for CA MTSS, in order to be implemented and continuously evaluated and strengthened, the Coaching TA Practice develops an organization’s coaching capacity to support the acquisition and application of transformative efforts so they can be sustained over time.
One example of how to build an organization’s coaching capacity is through the use of Jim Knight’s 7 Principles of the Partnership Approach Links to an external site. (equality, choice, voice, dialogue, reflection, praxis, and reciprocity). Knight's research and practice have determined these seven principles essential elements for any sustainable partnership.
Another form of Coaching, grounded in research, is Cognitive Coaching Links to an external site.. Cognitive Coaching recognizes that changes in behavior are not possible unless there is a change in perception, belief, or assumption. Three types of structured conversations (planning, reflecting, & problem-solving) offer coaches a map that ensures a productive coaching session. Cognitive Coaching provides an understanding of the five States of Mind: Efficacy, Craftsmanship, Interdependence, Flexibility, and Consciousness. The purpose of Cognitive Coaching is to produce self-directed persons with the cognitive capacity for excellence both independently and as members of a community.
As you progress in this work, your team is not alone. There are coordinated teams built throughout the state to provide support and coaching during your journey. When your team has questions, or you determine resources or training your team needs to move forward, you are encouraged to reach out to your county office of education. They can provide technical assistance, additional professional learning, and other important support as you build CA MTSS throughout your LEA.
Region and County Office Leads Links to an external site.
In addition to your county office of education, regional leads have been assigned to provide support and keep your LEA updated with policy changes and provide training and support. State teams advocate for CA MTSS and encourage state politicians and other education policy-makers to keep CA MTSS at the forefront of their work to ensure California is moving forward with a Whole Child philosophy.
