Practice Profile [Evaluate]

CA MTSS logo Achieve Priorities Through Practices

LCAP and SPSA Goals tend to be broad statements and generally do not provide specific details regarding what practitioners are doing to support students. Therefore, in order to achieve a Priority (LCAP or SPSA Goal), there are specific practices that are involved.

Practices are defined as purposefully selected interventionsactions, or collection of activities that lead to the accomplishment of the priority.

We use the acronym TOLD to define the characteristics of the practices. There are 4 important elements that all practices include. Practices are:

  • Teachable

  • Learnable

  • Observable

  • Doable

TOLD - Teachable, Observable, Learnable, Doable

To distinguish between priorities and practices, let’s use Inclusive Academic Instruction as an example. Inclusive Academic Instruction would be considered a priority because it is very broad.

There are many elements involved in academic instruction; these elements are considered practices. In the area of Inclusive Academic Instruction, there are specific actionable practices that educators do  that lead to meeting the academic needs of students. For example, Think-Write-Pair-Share (TWPS) is an evidence-based practice used in academic instruction. We can teach an educator how to utilize the practice, we can observe it happening in a classroom, students can learn how to do TWPS, and as a result, students and educators can do TWPS.

  • Identify the core components of the practice

  • Describe the key activities

  • Enable the practice to be Teachable, Observable, Learnable, Doable

  • Make the process clear so practitioners can carry out

Utilize the Practice Profile Links to an external site. to identify the specific Priority and the Practice(s) that will help to achieve the Priority. Include a descriptive statement of the Practice(s) and the elements that MUST be in place in order for the Practice to be implemented with fidelity. In other words, what is the Gold Standard? Finally, include any notes or action steps needed.
