Know Your Destination [Watch & Reflect]

CA MTSS logo Have a Clear Destination

Now that you have determined your professional "why," and you've learned about inclusive teaching practices such as HLPs, SEL, CLRT, and UDL, it is important that the stakeholders within your LEA and school also understand their "why" for engaging in this purposeful work. When everyone understands the beliefs, culture, and goals established for students and families at your LEA/school, then everyone can support and engage in moving the work forward.

Having a clear destination is similar to understanding your why. When organizations have a clear destination, the work becomes more meaningful.

Schools and LEAs typically have a written destination or a goal statement, it is called the mission statement. Mission statements define where your school is going and drive decisions accordingly; they lay out academic goals, behavioral goals, social-emotional goals, community priorities, and the overall purpose of your school. The mission statement allows stakeholders to have a common set of beliefs and a destination to move towards.

Take a moment to review your LEA's/school's mission statement.

LightbulbReflect:

As you review the mission statement for your LEA/school:

    • What are the goals for students?
    • Can you determine the academic goals, behavioral goals, social-emotional goals, mental health goals, and community priorities?
    • Is the mission statement shared with stakeholders so everyone has a common set of beliefs and a destination to move towards?
