What About Feedback? - Paraeducator Pathway [Read]
Visible Learning
According to the book Visible Learning Links to an external site., by John Hattie:
Feedback is most powerful when its from the student to the teacher . . . When teachers seek or at least are open to feedback from students as to what students know, what they understand, where they make errors, when they have misconceptions, when they are not engaged - then teaching and learning can be synchronized and powerful. Feedback to teachers helps make learning visible. |
On the other hand:
Feedback is about providing information about the task. The most effective forms of feedback provide cues or reinforcement to the learner . . . to be effective, feedback needs to be clear, purposeful, meaningful, and compatible with students' prior knowledge, and to provide logical connections . . . to learning goals. |
Effective feedback given immediately AFTER instruction provides the following information to both the student and the teacher. In other words, three questions are answered:
-
- Where am I going? - learning intentions/goals/success
- How am I doing? - self-assessment and self-evaluation
- Where am I going next? - progression, new goals
