Go Further: Calculate your Child’s GPA

Here is an activity to help you understand how to calculate a GPA.

Remember that GPA is calculated by assigning a point value to each grade letter.

A = 4

B = 3

C = 2

D = 1

F = 0

Add the grade points for each class together, then divide the total by the number of classes taken.

For Example: Benjamin took six classes and received the following grades:

  1. Algebra II (A) = 4
  2. English (B) = 3
  3. Biology (A) = 4
  4. Football (A) = 4
  5. German II (A) = 4
  6. Ceramics (B) = 3

Add all of the values - 4+3+4+4+4+3 = 22

Divide the total values (22) by the number of classes (6): 22 ÷ 6 = 3.67

As a result, Benjamin’s GPA is 3.67

Now, calculate Maria’s Grade Point Avg.

Maria took four classes and received the following grades:

  1. Algebra II (A) = 4
  2. English (A) = 4
  3. Biology (A) = 4
  4. German II (C) = 2
